A program to promote the use of community halls in Byron Shire will receive funding under the Australian government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams has announced that $20,000 will be provided to Byron Shire Council for its Building Capacity in Byron’s Community Halls venture.

Senator Williams said a skilled contractor will be engaged to identify the facilities offered by the thirteen halls and venues and a report will be provided to Council which will include a communications and marketing plan for their use.

“The benefit of this project is the greater use of community facilities.”

“But without the Building Better Regions Fund, such projects often struggle to get funding”, Senator Williams said.

General Manager of Byron Shire Ken Gainger said community halls are often the foundation of a tight-knit community and on any given day are home to dances, fundraising dinners, cinema experiences, concerts and performances, public meetings.

“Our halls are run by volunteer management committees and we are looking forward to enhancing their leadership capacity. As part of the grant the committees will work closely with a consultant to gather information, identify potential users for each facility and further their marketing skills and knowledge through specialised workshops,” Mr. Gainger added.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the Building Better Regions Fund Community Investment Stream was investing $6.9 million in community projects throughout regional Australia.

“I aim to help build the kinds of regional communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to.”

The Building Better Regions Fund is investing $500 million to foster economic growth in rural, regional, and remote communities.
