School leavers who are planning to undertake tertiary study or an apprenticeship next year have been urged to apply for Youth Allowance now.

The Nationals Duty Senator for Hunter John Williams says an estimated 340,000 Youth Allowance claims will be made to the Department of Human Services early next year but students in the Hunter electorate can beat the rush and apply now.

Senator Williams said eligible students aged 16 to 24 can lodge their claim 13 weeks before their course or apprenticeship commences.

“By doing this the payments would start as soon as they begin the next stage in their lives.

The amount of Youth Allowance they receive depends on individual circumstances such as parental means, personal income and assets.

I urge students and their parents to act now and apply at”, Senator Williams said.
