Renowned Australian entertainer Kamahl has delivered a powerful recitation of the Gettysburg Address at Parliament House in Canberra.

On the 150th anniversary of the original speech by Abraham Lincoln, the event was organised by the Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams and the Deputy President of the Senate Senator Stephen Parry.

Retired General Peter Cosgrove, former Chief of the Defence Force, explained that President Abraham Lincoln had delivered the original address in the small town of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania on the 19th of November, 1863.

The area had been the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the American Civil War.

Senator Parry said that after meeting President Obama when he visited Australia two years ago, Kamahl was moved to record his own rendition of the Gettysburg Address as it maintained the principle that all men were equal, and they should not be judged by the colour of their skin.

Senator Williams said Kamahl delivered a moving rendition of the Gettysburg Address to representatives of a number of overseas Embassies, parliamentarians, invited guests and the media.
