True to his word, Prime Minister Tony Abbott today introduced legislation into the House of Representatives to repeal the carbon tax from July 1 next year.

The Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams said this will be applauded by the majority of Australians and business who have been weighed down by a tax that was forced upon them.

Senator Williams said the government will ensure that companies pass the benefits on to consumers by giving the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission the powers and resources to take action against businesses that exploit prices.

He said that on average households will be around $550 better off in the 2014-15 financial year.

Senator Williams said the Gillard Labor government did not have a mandate to introduce the carbon tax and had even said it wouldn’t, so he hopes Labor in the Senate respects the mandate the Abbott-Truss government has to consign it to history.
